The Rural Enterprise Financing Initiative (REFP), backed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADER), aimed to strengthen the livelihoods of vulnerable rural families in Mozambique. As part of this effort, we were selected as a strategic partner organization, working with 5,000 people, including small farmers, fishermen, and rural workers across 8 districts in the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Tete, and Zambézia.
Through a holistic Graduation approach, we addressed the multiple barriers faced by families. This approach focused on strengthening the productive, financial, human, and social assets of participants, promoting their self-sufficiency and resilience in the face of external shocks.
Five key components were developed, including multidimensional training, the creation of savings groups, providing investment incentives, agricultural technical assistance, and facilitating links with formal financial services. We specifically focused on the inclusion of women and youth by creating spaces for empowerment and collaboration.
The training methodology combined digital technology with personal interactions, ensuring that each participant received attention tailored to their needs. We conducted group workshops and regular home visits, which allowed individuals to feel supported on their journey toward socioeconomic development. Through this initiative, a sense of community and collaboration was fostered, promoting a more sustainable future for all.
