Between 2021 and 2023, we supported the implementation of the ProPesca initiative in Mozambique, aiming to strengthen the financial capabilities of artisanal fishing communities by creating savings groups and linking them to formal financial service providers. In collaboration with the Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Institute and with technical and financial support from IFAD and the Skoll Foundation, we provided technical assistance to the Mozambican government to enhance financial inclusion in more than 100,000 rural households.
We began with a participatory assessment in community fishing centers, where we identified structural barriers such as lack of information on how to use bank accounts, limited understanding of financial products, and weaknesses in the internal management of savings groups. Based on these findings, we developed an educational methodology focused on five key topics, using messages that promoted financial well-being and self-confidence.
We implemented a practical financial education program using tools such as flipbooks, card games, and sessions facilitated by local technicians. In addition, we established partnerships with financial institutions and mobile operators to facilitate account opening and connect communities to financial services. The process strengthened the self-management of savings groups, increased trust in digital savings, and improved people's financial planning skills.
