Women and More Productive Businesses is a program driven by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism of Colombia, through Colombia Productiva, in partnership with the Promigas Foundation. Its goal is to strengthen the economic empowerment of women who are victims of armed conflict and forced displacement, and who lead commercial establishments, promoting their financial autonomy and the sustainability of their businesses.
In Colombia, 62.1% of microbusinesses are owned by men, while 37.9% are owned by women. Although female participation in business ownership surpasses the global average, the pandemic reduced the number of women-led microbusinesses by 9.3%. Only 29% of women make financial decisions at home, reflecting a significant gap in economic autonomy. (DANE 2023).
Despite economic challenges, the participants have shown great resilience and entrepreneurial capacity. In 2022, 62.8% of households in Colombia earned income below the per capita poverty line, however, 37.2% of the participants exceeded this threshold, indicating that one-third of the female entrepreneurs have achieved greater financial stability.
