18 AWARD-WINNING YOUTH PROJECTS USING E-CONTENT TO CHANGE THE WORLD

DUBAI AIRPORT IS like a shopping mall in the underbelly of the Star Trek Voyager with patches of greenery that resemble what they think Earth looks like. After pit stops there and on the runway amongst lagoons and resorts in the Maldives I arrived in Colombo, the host city of this year’s World Summit Youth Awards. The hotel and main venue was a semi-realised dream of money and glamour that didn’t quite hit the mark, with oversized chairs in its lobby that gave it the air of a high-end bank in Alice in Wonderland.

Upward Mobility for the World’s Destitute

There’s poor, and then there’s ultrapoor. The ultrapoor are almost always women and largely found in Africa, South Asia and to a lesser extent, parts of Latin America. They are most often rural. They work as maids or field laborers, often paid not with wages but in food scraps. They might have just one dress or sari, and must wash a part of it at a time while wearing it, or stay in the river for modesty till it dries.

Poverty is dropping around the world. In 1981, more than half the globe lived on the equivalent of $1.25 a day. By 1990, that number fell to 43 percent, and today it’s at 21 percent.

10 Things You May Not Know About Financial Capability

Although informed and capable clients are the center of the financial inclusion vision, there is little consensus on how to improve financial capability, who should deliver it, and how to measure its impact. There is even some debate about the extent to which financial capability enhancement efforts should be prioritized. Some argue that clients will develop the capability they need as they have access to, and gain practice with, formal financial services. Others point to the complex and often ingenious informal ways in which poor people manage their money, and say that it is paternalistic to assume that poor people are any less capable of managing their money than wealthy consumers.

Beyond Mobile: Tablets as Tools for the Extreme Poor

The power of cell phones to advance development issues is well-documented. By February of 2014, there were almost as many cell phone subscriptions (6.8 billion) as people on earth (7 billion). These devices serve many purposes that go beyond basic communication – phones are electronic wallets, vehicles for information, and ways to connect with essential services, for instance.
